Fair Ways School Nature Meadow Swanwick

About

Fair Ways School is an independent specialist school supporting young people aged 11-16 with complex social, emotional, and mental health needs based in Swanwick.

Many of the students the school supports are care-experienced or have experienced significant disadvantage in their lives. The school has recently taken over the management of a small parcel of land near the school with the aim of transforming it from intensively managed grassland into a species-rich wildflower meadow, with native tree planting, new hedgerows, and pollinator habitats.

What makes the project particularly distinctive is the direct involvement of students in creating and caring for the nature meadow. They will participate in habitat creation, tree planting, biodiversity monitoring, and conservation activities, helping them develop practical skills, environmental awareness, and a stronger connection with the natural world. In addition, the nature meadow will act as a much-needed outdoor regulation space through the inclusion of a mown path, seating and areas for reflection.

The JTCT are delighted to fund half of the project with the additional cost being match funded. The donation will go towards habitat establishment costs, native and fruiting tree planting, pollinator habitats, interpretation boards, seating areas and other enhancements that will increase both the biodiversity and educational value of the site. We look forward to seeing how this area transforms and the positive impact this has for pupils.
