Enham Trust Community Orchard and Walled Garden Project

It’s almost a year ago since The James Tuttiett Charitable Trust provided a contribution to support the Enham Trust Community Orchard and Walled Garden Project.

Their vision is to create a community green space that the whole village can access and enjoy, an area where people can work together towards a shared goal which they aim to be a self-sustaining, legacy project.

Work began last year with the team completing the initial groundwork which included removing the wall that separated the garden, together with clearing shrubbery, excess growth and rotten timber

With community involvement at the heart of the design, this Spring saw the start of the next phase of work, prepping the ground for planting apple, pear and plum trees together with the installation of accessible pathing and access into the orchard and what a transformation it’s been!

The team have been hard at work planting the sensory garden and have had major success with their Mental Health Awareness Week plans which saw the new space host six wellbeing sessions – ranging from mindfulness and nature walks to creative workshops and stress-relief techniques – welcoming over 100 participants across four days.

Nigel Sully, Head of Gardening and Domestics at Enham Trust commented:

“Ultimately the vision is to provide a space where the community can come together to learn to grow food, have access to free food, provide volunteering and learning opportunities to local residents and most importantly, be accessible so that all village residents, including those with a disability, can benefit from this exciting project.

“This is a community led initiative that Enham Trust is proud to support. Once the groundworks and accessible planters, beds and benches are installed, we will look to develop a standalone community group that will help run and maintain the space

The project aims to remove barriers to accessing the outdoors for disabled individuals, improving community wellbeing and allow positive community development and cohesion whilst preserving the history of this unique Hampshire village.

The JTCT is delighted to have contributed to this worthwhile cause and to see the positive impact its already had on the community and the benefits to wildlife.
