The James Tuttiett Charitable Trust’s donation was incredibly important to us and this was the most ambitious project in our charity’s history. Their kindness helped enhance this new facility which is described as ‘leading the way’ in paediatric emergency healthcare: including transforming how some children are treated in a large treatment-play room, improving dignity and reducing stress with large soundproofed private rooms replacing small curtained bays and installing immersive distraction equipment throughout to reduce anxiety.”

‘2MillionSteps’ was a nationwide appeal to build a state of the art Children’s Emergency and Trauma Department at University Hospital Southampton. The UHS had already committed £1.1m to this £5.1m project, leaving £4m still to raise. The Murray Parish Trust successfully lobbied the government and secured match-funding for the new unit which was announced in the Spring 2016 budget.

The unit now provides a dedicated children’s reception, triage and waiting area, access to resuscitation facility, single ensuite rooms, an 8 bedded short stay observation area, 11 specialist observation rooms for acute assessment and treatment together with all supporting staff facilities.

The Trust was pleased to support this campaign and in November 2018 the remaining funds were raised. The department was officially opened in October 2020.
