Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association

Established in 1991 the annual Great South Run is a firm fixture in the south however, this year race organisers had to take the tough decision to cancel the race due to strong winds and rain.   There were an expected record 25,000 entries this year which starts at Clarence Esplanade in Southsea and takes in city landmarks, including the Historic Dockyard and Spinnaker Tower.

One group who had planned to complete the 10.5 miles race was the Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association who had around 900 people signed up over the whole weekend raising funds for Portsmouth DSA which is a record number at this event.

Undeterred a group from the Portsmouth DSA decided to hold an unofficial run which included Ken Ross Vice-Chair of the charity his son Tom (24) and Max (20) who completed his 12th Great South Run weekend! Out of the 7 who took part in the 5km, Max finished first, beating Ken to the line by about 60m!

The JTCT is delighted to continue supporting the Portsmouth DSA and along with other donors means the charity can continue to be the UKs largest provider of free specialist support for children and young people with Down Syndrome.

As well as providing staff to work in nearly 100 schools, training 1,000s of professionals each year, they also organise and deliver around 150 events every year, promoting sport, performing arts, communication, socialising, fundraising and awareness.

Well done to everyone who took part. To find out more and how you can support please visit Fundraising – Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association
