Momentum is a charity that provides and facilitates accessible fitness sessions for local people across Hampshire. The charities vision is that everyone in the local community should have equal access and opportunity to participate in, and experience the benefits of physical activity.
In the three years since the JTCT donated to Momentum Fitness the charity has gone from strength to strength.
They’ve delivered over 1,000 exercise therapy sessions to children and young people, supported more than 190 older adults through their Fit for Life programme, and provided over 1,150 hours of functional fitness sessions to teenagers with social, emotional and mental health needs.
The charity is now launching two new projects FitForLife and PB-Active.
The FitForLife project works with over 55’s providing a fully funded 12-week programme of functional fitness to those at risk of social isolation and loneliness in the local area. Alongside the exercise, they facilitate time for a hot drink and chat at the end of the sessions and so many social connections can be formed. By the end of the year, they will have completed 9 cohorts of this project having impacted around 180 people’s lives. Participants regularly reference how this project has changed their lives and you can read some of their impact stories here:
https://www.momentumfitnesscharity.org.uk/ffl/ The second project PB-Active started initially based solely on the Piam Brown ward at Southampton Children’s Hospital, delivering pioneering exercise therapy to children with and recovering from cancer. Over the last year or so, they’ve expanded this project to QA Hospital in Portsmouth. Whilst many sessions take place on the ward, the majority now take place at their gym location in Eastleigh, Hampshire, where they’re able to have the greatest impact in providing a more comfortable setting for children, who are understandably keen to get away from the clinical environment. With this project, they focus on supporting children to find joy in movement again. Through the delivery of personalised exercise programmes, they help patients maintain and improve their strength and physical fitness, and most importantly, get back to being children again.
